Meet Ashlan, Our January Mama of the Month

Where are you from originally?

I grew up here in Chapel Hill! I lived in Charlotte for 12 years before moving back to Chapel Hill with my husband, Joey, last year.

When did you join FIT4MOM

I joined FIT4MOM in August when my daughter, Nina, was 3 months old.

What is your favorite thing about FIT4MOM?

You can check off exercise, time with your baby, and time with mom friends all in one hour. I always leave class feeling better than when I arrived.

What do you currently do?

I am a licensed architect, specializing in healthcare. I work from home for an architecture and engineering firm based in Charlotte.

Share your thoughts on the concept of “it takes a village” – is it important for moms to join a village?

It's life saving for moms to have a village. Moving while I was pregnant meant that as a new mom I was hours away from my friends and support systems in Charlotte. Finding community with FIT4MOM has given me support through this postpartum phase. I love that you can show up exactly as you and your baby are that day and be greeted with no judgement, just understanding.

What is your favorite beverage?

Hot coffee, or this time of year, a warm mug of mulled wine (a German Christmas tradition!)

What is your favorite dessert?

This is super specific but the espresso chocolate cake at Well Bred Bakery in Asheville. We planned our whole "babymoon" around going to that bakery and getting that cake!

You are given 4 hours of FREE baby-sitting. What would you do?

I would get a massage, take a nap, and go to a nice restaurant with my husband to have dinner together without trying to keep our baby entertained.

What is your ultimate child-free vacation destination?

My husband and I both studied abroad in Rome in college, but at different times. We've been dreaming of going back together and sharing all of our favorite spots with each other.

How has becoming a mother changed you?

It has made me more patient and understanding and I'm learning to find joy in the small, everyday moments. Nina's laugh is the best sound I've ever heard and a hot shower at the end of the day feels luxurious.

I am happiest when...

I'm in fresh air with my family. I love the cooler weather and being able to bundle Nina up and get outside!
