Sarah Bonenberger

Instructor & Playgroup Captain, FIT4MOM® Chapel Hill

Sarah grew up in an Army family, living a dozen places before graduating from high school. She studied sociology at the University of Washington before moving to Los Angeles with Teach For America in 2006. There she taught middle school English and history and earned her Master of Arts degree in Education from Loyola Marymount. Sarah completed her first marathon in 2008 and was inspired to start a chapter of Students Run L.A., a non-profit that trains at-risk youth to complete a marathon. She coached students through three seasons of the L.A. Marathon.

In 2011, Sarah left L.A. for a year of volunteering and exploring via camper van, with now-husband Ryan. A two-year stint in Lansing, Michigan after the adventure provided Sarah the opportunity to work with 4th-8th grade classrooms as an Academic Specialist. She also co-chaired the Students, Spouses, and Significant Others group for Ryan’s MBA program, organizing events and activities for students and their families.

Sarah and Ryan moved to Portland, Oregon in 2014, and welcomed their first son, Cole, in June. Little brother Hudson followed in March 2016. Wanting to be closer to family, they relocated to Chapel Hill at the end of 2016. Finding FIT4MOM shortly after moving was the final piece in Sarah’s recovery from postpartum depression. The sense of community she felt in FIT4MOM classes anchored her something more than the struggles of motherhood and made her feel at home in North Carolina.

Sarah teaches Stroller Strides and is our Playgroup Captain! In her role as Playgroup Captain, Sarah plans and orchestrates weekly playgroup activities held on Fridays after Stroller Strides. Playgroups vary in themes and activities for little ones to learn and explore.

Certifications: FIT4MOM Stroller Strides® Instructor; American Red Cross First Aid; Adult, Child, & Infant CPR
