Dealing with Stress

We all have a lot on our plates right now. Life can seem overwhelming, with competing sources vying for our attention. These five daily habits have helped me keep stress at bay and focus on the big picture.

  1. Turn off notifications on your phone. Set all alerts to OFF (text dings, email inbox, social media notifications). If it’s urgent, you’ll get a phone call.

  2. Try a 10-minute meditation every day. You don’t need anything fancy for this, and it can be done anytime during the day. Choose one that fits with how you want to feel (patient, focused, calm). I like sleep meditations to keep from thinking too much before bed.

  3. Write down the top 3 things you want to get done that day. Just three -- no more. If your To Do list is too long, you’ll feel overwhelmed. We approach decision fatigue as the day progresses so try to get them done before 3:00p.

  4. Streamline daily housework. I do one load of laundry from start to finish every day. My mom gave me this tip a few years ago when I was drowning in unfolded weekend laundry, and it’s a game-changer. Run the dishwasher at night before you head to bed, and empty the dishwasher in the morning.

  5. Get outside every day. If you’re grinding out computer work, set a timer to work in 25-minute increments. Make yourself get up and move for 5 minutes before returning to your desk. Just five minutes outdoors can reset your senses, making you ready to tackle what’s next.

Above all else, remind yourself you are doing a great job, and this too shall pass.
