The Herald-Sun's Front Page Coverage of "Climb Out of the Darkness"

On Saturday, June 24th, held our 1st annual Climb Out of the Darkness hike with 80+ mothers, fathers, friends, neighbors, grandparents, kids, & babies gathered together to raise awareness for maternal and paternal mental health. Together we raised $1,620+ for PSI-NC (Postpartum Support International of North Carolina) & Postpartum Education and Support.

Climb Out of the Darkness® is the world’s largest event raising awareness of maternal mental illnesses like postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety & OCD, postpartum PTSD, postpartum psychosis, bipolar/peripartum onset, and pregnancy depression and anxiety.

Climb Out of the Darkness® is held on or near the longest day of the year annually to help shine the most light on perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. The event features mothers and families across the globe joining together to climb mountains and hike trails to represent their symbolic rise out of the darkness of maternal mental illness and into the light of hope and recovery.

Before our hike, adults wrote on a notecard something they wanted to leave behind. Reviewing the notes after the event, it's incredible to see the solidarity in what Climbers are ready to release (shame, self doubt, insecurity, embarrassment, negativity, overwhelm, exhaustion). On another notecard, Climbers wrote what they are ready to receive as they Climb Out of the Darkness. Again, the common wishes show camaraderie in the journey (hope, confidence, peace, mindfulness, strength, love, happiness, positivity). This simple, but meaningful exercise highlighted two things: 1) you're not alone in what you hope to release, and 2) you're not alone in what you seek.

On our Climb, we walked with new and old friends. We shared laughs, hugs, stories and simply enjoyed the beautiful morning. Local moms, you have a Village of support, especially from the 4 amazing business sponsors that shared resources today UNC Center for Women's Mood Disorders, Women's Birth and Wellness Center, NC Center for Resiliency, PLLC, Thrive Integrative Wellness Coaching.

Thank you to The Herald-Sun for attending our event and a great article Moms 'Climb Out of the Darkness' seeking help. We appreciate you!
